Genre Research: Ghostbusters

The next film in the comedy genre I am researching is Ghostbusters (the original 1984 version).

  • This film uses many common camera shots in comedy, such as closeups, which show the actors' emotions for comedic effect. There are also many two-shots showing characters either talking or working together to battle ghosts.
  • Costumes in this movie often show the protagonists in beige vests with a Ghostbusters logo. Lighting is usually fairly bright, even during the darker scenes. The acting is very comedic and never very professional or serious. Makeup is more casual for the four main men, but some characters such as Gozer wear intricate, creepy makeup. Props include the backpacks full of "ghost-busting" equipment that the four protagonists wear on their backs. The setting is New York City.
  • The sound in this film includes a sound motif that plays multiple times during the movie: a theme song made specifically for the film. There are also examples of incidental music, such as during the stay-puffed marshmallow man scene, which builds anticipation.
  • Editing techniques in this film include eyeline matches during certain sequences. There is also lots of cross-cutting, one example being the "he slimed me" scene.
  • This film has many comedy movie elements, including upbeat music, bright lighting, comedic acting, and occasional moments of tension.
  • I love many of the comedy elements used throughout this film, such as the soundtrack and the silly acting. These elements make the film more fun and entertaining.
  • One element used in this film that I do not like is the occasional tense/creepy moments. These take away from the comedic elements and make it feel more serious and intense than a typical comedy film should be.
