Music Video Research - Conventions

For my music video, I am doing the song "Feels" by Calvin Harris, featuring Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry, and Big Sean. I watched the music video for this song, as well as others like it: "Pasadena" by Tinashe ft. Buddy, and "How Far I'll Go" by Alessia Cara.

CAMS:

  • Music videos in this style often include tracking shots and high angles showcasing the tropical setting.
  • They also include close-up shots of the artists in their costumes.
  • In addition, there are usually wide shots of the entire set or group of artists in the video.

CLAMPS:

  • The artists in these music videos usually wear beach-esque outfits; men usually wear tropic buttoned-down shirts with sunglasses, while women usually wear colorful, eretheral dresses.
  • They usually take place on a beach or in a luxurious outdoor setting.
  • Props often include beach chairs and sometimes fake parrots.

Sound:

  • Most of the sound comes from the song itself in these videos, however, they often include diegetic sounds, like waves crashing or wind howling in the background.
  • The score is often catchy and pleasurable, emulating the feeling of relaxing outdoors.

Editing:

  • These music videos usually feature a fade in/fade out effect, which matches the relaxing vibe.
  • They also tend to include jump cuts that show the artist moving from one area of the set to another.
  • Music videos like these also feature eyeline match shots, in which the camera directly aligns with the artists' eyes. This creates an inviting vibe within the video.

Conventions:

1. In these music videos, the song title is very often displayed either at the beginning or at the very end. This makes it feel more movie- or story-like, and to immerse the viewer into the setting.

2. The music videos always show the artists' costumes in detail to emphasize their aesthetic attractiveness, which enhances the video's uplifting nature.

3. The videos also show off various parts of the tropical setting, such as beaches, grass fields, cliffsides, and rocks, to show the viewer how vast and inviting these locations are.
